A three‑day private journey from Fez to Marrakech across the Middle Atlas, the Sahara, and the High Atlas. Ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, spend the night in a desert camp, hear Gnawa music in Khamlia, walk the Todra Gorge, and explore the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou before crossing the Tizi‑n‑Tichka pass. Meals, accommodation, and a private driver throughout. No group pace, no rushed stops.
Day 1: Fes to Merzouga – Into the Sahara
Leave Fes early and climb into the Middle Atlas. The road winds through cedar forests near Ifrane, where Barbary macaques gather around an 800‑year‑old cedar. Stretch your legs, take a few photos, and breathe in the cool mountain air before descending toward the desert.
By late afternoon the landscape flattens, the colours shift to ochre and gold, and you reach Merzouga. A line of camels waits at the edge of the dunes. You’ll ride into Erg Chebbi as the sun drops behind the sand, the light turning the peaks from amber to rose to deep shadow. The trek takes about an hour, and you arrive at camp just as the last light leaves the sky.
Dinner is served in a communal tent or under the stars: a slow‑cooked tagine, fresh bread, and mint tea. Afterward, the camp guides play drums around the fire. Sleep in a canvas tent, or drag your mattress outside and let the Milky Way put you to sleep.
Day 2: Merzouga to Ouarzazate – Gorges and Kasbahs
Wake before dawn if you want to climb a dune and watch the sunrise from the highest sand in Morocco. After a granola snack and a short camel ride back to the lodge, breakfast is served with plenty of hot tea.
The morning takes you to Khamlia, a small village of Gnawa musicians. You’ll sit in a private home for a performance of guembri and krakebs, the rhythmic heartbeat of a tradition brought here from West Africa centuries ago. Tipping the maâlem is expected and appreciated.
From Khamlia, the drive heads north toward the Todra Gorge. The road passes palm groves and crumbling kasbahs before the canyon walls close in, rising 300 metres on either side. Lunch is at a riverside café where you can dip your feet in the cold mountain water. In the afternoon, continue west through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate. You’ll arrive in time for a walk through the city’s film‑history streets and dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in a comfortable riad or hotel.
Day 3: Ouarzazate to Marrakech – Aït Ben Haddou and the High Atlas
After an early breakfast, drive a short distance to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO‑listed ksar. A local guide walks you through the narrow alleys, past earthen towers that have stood for five centuries, and explains how the village defended itself against desert raiders. You’ll recognise the backdrop from Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy.
From there, the road climbs into the High Atlas via the Tizi‑n‑Tichka pass. At 2,260 metres, it’s the highest paved crossing in North Africa. There are stops for photos, roadside mineral stalls, and a chance to stretch your legs at the summit. The descent brings you into the red‑earth plains outside Marrakech.
You’ll arrive in the early afternoon. Lunch together is the last meal of the tour, after which you’re dropped at your riad, the airport, or the train station. If you’d like to continue to Essaouira or extend your stay, we can arrange it.
