Day Trip: Fez to Chefchaouen
Leave Fez early and head north into the Rif Mountains. The drive takes about three and a half hours, climbing past cork oaks and small farms before the road dips into a valley and everything turns blue. You’ll park above the medina and walk into the cobbled lanes that have made Chefchaouen famous.
The morning moves at a calm pace: a visit to the 15th‑century kasbah, a walk through Plaza Uta el‑Hammam, and enough time to stop at the workshops where local women weave striped blankets and mix argan oil. Lunch is at Ras El Ma, the natural spring at the edge of the medina; the water runs cold and clear, and you can eat a tagine with the sound of the stream beside you.
In the afternoon you can shop for handwoven rugs, ceramics, and leather, all made in the small workshops tucked into the medina’s staircases. As the light begins to soften, climb the short path to the Spanish Mosque, the climb takes about five minutes – and watch the sun set over the blue city from the best viewpoint in the valley. After the sunset you’ll drive back to Fez, arriving in the evening.
