Day 1: Casablanca to Meknes and Volubilis
Starting your tour from Casablanca, Our first stop is the historic city of Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial cities. Visit the impressive Bab Mansour, a grand gateway known for its stunning architecture, and Heri es-Souani, the ancient granaries and stables built by Sultan Moulay Ismail.
Next, we travel to the small town of Moulay Zerhoun, a significant spiritual site. Here, visit the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the first Moroccan Islamic dynasty. The town’s whitewashed buildings and winding streets provide a delightful atmosphere.
Our journey continues to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. This UNESCO World Heritage site features well-preserved ruins from the city’s heyday (24-285 AD). Wander through the remains of grand houses, intricate mosaics, and towering columns, all set against a backdrop of rolling hills and green fields. Volubilis offers a fascinating look into Morocco’s Roman past.
After a day of historical exploration, return to your Riad in Meknes or Fez for a restful night after a delicious local dinner, reflecting on the history and culture you’ve experienced.
Day 2: Fez and Its Surroundings
Fez’s walled city is thought to be the largest car-free urban area in the world. Its medina is reminiscent of Disney’s Aladdin when Abu the Monkey and Aladdin were making their escape from the sultan’s guards. You’ll be transported back to the 8th century when the city was founded. Many things about life and industry are totally unchanged.
During this tour, you’ll visit workshops, mosque, and tanneries where traditional crafts and artisanal products are manufactured precisely as they have been for hundreds of years. In addition to industry, Fez has been an important center of education and religion for over a thousand years.
The walled medina has different neighborhoods that developed during different centuries. You’ll visit the most ancient part of the medina, founded by the Idrisi dynasty between 789 and 808 A.D., Fez el-Bali grew around the ancient quarter and reached its zenith in the 12th and 13th centuries, Fez Jedid (New Fez), which contains the royal palace, expanded after the 13th century, and the Jewish quarter was founded shortly after that.
The tour ends in Fez. Your guide will drop you at your riad, the airport, or the train station – whichever suits your onward plans.
